The thyroid gland is found in the neck region known as the Adam’s apple. It is in the shape of a butterfly and the lobes which are wing shaped wraps around the trachea from each side.
The thyroid tissue which is called the isthmus is a narrow band wich joins the lobes together. Though the thyroid gland is the biggest gland in the neck region it is the smallest gland in the body. The function of the thyroid gland is to collect the iodine from the food and use it to produce the thyroid hormone. This gland produces two types of hormone whcih are thyroxin and triodothyronine.
The cells in the thyroid gland are the only cells in the whole body which have the capacity to absorb the iodine and then combine it with tyrosine which is an amino acid to produce both the hormones that is also known as T3 and T4. The main function of the thyroid hormone is to facilitate the metabolic function of the body so all the cells in the body depend on the thyroid cells for the regulation of metabolism. Any kind of disorder in the thyroid glands can affect the total functioning of the body.
The imbalance in the thyroid can be caused bya number of reasons out of which the main reason is the pollution in the environment which is full of harmful chemicals that have a direct impact on the thyroid glands. The chemicals that reduce the efficiency of the gland are bromide, chlorine, fluoride and other petrochemical toxins. As this is the only gland that controls the metabolism of the body so any kind of dysfunction of this gland affects the whole metabolic functioning of the body.
The other elements that cause problem in the thyroid gland are allergic conditions, lack of the nutrients that are required for proper functioning of the thyroid gland and the stress and strain of daily life affect the functioning of the thyroid gland and cause hormonal imbalance in the body which is also known as hyperthyroidism which means excessive hormone production or hypothyroidism which means insufficient production of the hormone. Cancer in the thyroid is also a cause of dysfunction of the thyroid glands.
As the entire metabolic system is controlled by the hormones that is produced by the thyroid glands so any kind of hormonal imbalance affects the entire metabolism of the body due to which proper burning of the calories that is consumed by the intake of food does not take place which leads to the accumulation of fat in the body and the result is obesity.
The thyroid hormones is also needed for proper functioning of the brain so any kind of hormonal imbalance will also affect the proper functioning of the brain. The heart is also affected by the hormonal imbalance as the beating of the heart is influenced by the hormones so any kind of hormonal imbalance weakens the heart. In a nutshell it can be said that the entire functioning of the body will be adversely affected by thyroid hormonal imbalance
