Hormonal Imbalance - Male And Female

The Real Score Between Hormonal Imbalance And Acne

Many people believe that the occurrence of acne is largely linked with the body functions that involve hormones. As such, most argue that the root causes of acne are hormonal changes and hormone imbalance. To a certain degree, such a popular belief is not really a superstition without a scientific basis. In fact, many people who are prone to acne have oily skin primarily because of the elevated level of androgens and testosterone present in their body.

In general, our androgens and estrogens play a very relevant role in ensuring that we have a healthy skin. However, if such hormones are produced in a body at a very high level, some adverse effects also occur. One of these is acne. Acne usually appears to both men and women starting from their teenage years up to their early 20s. Most of the lesions will usually occur on our faces, primarily in our cheeks, chin, and forehead. However, some individuals may also have lesions on their neck, chest, and even on their backs.

How Hormone Imbalance Can Cause Acne?

Basically, the hormone androgens are largely associated with various skin diseases. Many of the prevalent skin disorders are mostly triggered by excessive doses of the hormone androgen. Technically, such occurs when the high level of hormones stimulate the enlargement of the skin’s sebaceous glands. As a result, the glands produce and secret sebum. This substance then makes our skin oily and very prone to acne.

Acne MirrorOnce our sebaceous glands produce the sebum, the substance is accumulated by the hair follicles in dermis. Such usually go up the hair shafts and reaches the external layer of our skin. When this happens, the skin becomes very prone to dirt and bacteria build up. When the sebum mixes with dirt, the follicles and shafts of the skin become plugged. A plugged root follicle is an excellent breeding ground for germs and bacteria. This causes acne.

Acne Among Men And Women

When a person reaches the puberty age, his or her adrenal glands will secrete a puberty hormone which is known as “dihydroepiandrosterone sulfate” or simple, DHEAS. When this hormone is introduced with an excessive dose of testosterone, the body reaction would be highly stimulated sebaceous glands that will produce excessive amounts of sebum. This is why acne and other skin diseases are very prevalent among men and women in their teenage years.

However, it should be noted that since males have more levels of the hormone testosterone in their blood, they are more prone to have very severe cases of acne breakout than girls with the same age. Technically, a teenager that is inflicted with acne is much harder to treat than an adult primarily because of the constant high level doses of hormones in their body systems.

While recent dermatological studies try to make use of sebum in order to manufacture cosmetic materials that can help the skin easily adapt to excessive levels of hormones, there are already many topical medications offered to treat acne. However, it should be noted that since hormonal changes occur in teenagers, the skin’s response to these medication may change as well. This is probably why many dermatological experts often change their prescriptions to teenagers who have acne breakouts.
